With that, I have decided to pen a letter to my childhood dream couple...
Dear Olivia Newton John and John Travolta,
Why did you have to ruin the childhood memories I have of the flawless couple that is Sandy Olsen and Danny Zuko? Before Kate and Leo (I hate to even mention them in a letter like this...), and news of John's massage parlor trysts, the two of you were my one true pairing, the actors I desperately wanted to be together in real life. Now? You have segued into Hasselhoff territory.
Honestly, I can forgive the two of you for collaborating on a Christmas album. I even had the misguided hope that it would be cute. What I CANNOT forgive, however, is the music video you decided to release for the "hit single" off of your album, "I Think You Might Like It". No Zuko, I am second-hand embarrassed by it. Couldn't you do a cute little cover of "Baby It's Cold Outside" or something like that instead of this nonsense?
Remember when Sandy and Danny fly off into the clouds at the end of Grease? That should have been it. I was perfectly fine with that ending, but this...this is moredisappointingblasphemous than Grease 2. Olivia, you were hilarious in the "Physical" remake video on Glee. What happened to that?!
I don't know what else to say. I just beg of you to please stop the madness and please never ever ever make a video together again. The world can no longer trust your judgment.
Forever scarred,
Lauren Bradshaw
Here are a few of the many observations I had about the video:
1) Did a disgruntled Hot Topic employee style John? They are doing a country line dance but John is wearing a chain in his jeans and what looks like combat boots? I don't even know.
2) What is the storyline?... so John and Olivia are "together" but then his wife and children (maybe even his whole family) make cameo appearances doing the awkward line dance in John's house/airport?
3) I'm not even going to get into John's spray-on Ken doll hair... and the chin hair... oh the chin hair.
4) The song is creepy. Here are lyrics from one of the verses "My mind is going A little crazy knowing You’re coming home tonight I can’t help smiling at strangers on my street I’m singing to myself And tripping over my own feet".
5) Why is the title of this "hit" song so insecure? "I THINK you MIGHT Like It". In my opinion it should be changed to "I THINK You MIGHT Like It (But You Probably Don't And May Now Judge Me Forever).
5) And finally, stop trying to make your weird gangnam style wannabe dance move happen, it isn't going to happen.
Please join me in prayer that the upcoming Wizard of Oz prequel does not ruin the last bastion of childhood I have left.
Edited to add: Just found this video of Olivia and John on Ellen yesterday promoting the Christmas album. THIS is what we want to see, guys, not the music video! Please, never the music video.
